Chem 161 Placement Exam CLOSED

Chem 161 Placement Exam

Who needs to take the Prechemistry Assessment?

All students who wish to enroll in CHEM 161 for the first time must take the Prechemistry Assessment and obtain a passing score. A grade of “C” not C-” in CHEM 151 or CHEM 131 will be accepted in place of a placement exam score. Please contact the chemistry office for an override.

The purpose of the placement exam is to ascertain that a prospective CHEM 161 student has a sufficient background in basic math and chemistry to be able to perform adequately in CHEM 161. So this exam does not test you out of taking CHEM 161, it tests you to decide whether you will be admitted to CHEM 161. A student may sit for the exam twice a semester, but not twice on the same day. Students who score below 16 are advised to enroll in CHEM 131 so that they have an opportunity to strengthen their background. Students earning a grade of “C, but not C-“, or better in CHEM 131 taken at UH Manoa, will receive an override into CHEM 161 without having to take the placement exam again.

Prechemistry Assessment Exam On-line

The placement exam for each semester will be activated on the morning of the Testing Start Date listed in the table below and will remain accessible until 5:00 PM (FIRM) on the Testing End Date indicated. Overrides will be entered into MyUH accounts starting on the date indicated in the table below. It is your responsibility to take the exam sufficiently early that you have a qualifying score by the time your registration window comes around.

During open periods you can take the exam from a computer at home or on the UH campus at any time. Please be aware that public places with WIFI have limited bandwidth and that your connection may be dropped during the 30-50 minutes it will take you to complete the exam. You may not take the exam more than twice during the enrollment period for that semester, and you may not take it twice on the same day. This will be strictly enforced, and scores exceeding the maximum number of attempts will not be counted. NOTE: This is not a practice exam.

If you need to brush up on your math skills, consider attending the Summer Math Bootcamp.

Doing well in CHEM 171 depends on, among other things, a thorough understanding of all prerequisite material. Passing the 171 Prechemistry Assessment should not by itself be regarded as a guarantee of success.
