Subject: FY2009 Electricty Usage Reductions Exceed Targets
Dear Vice Chancellor,
I am pleased to announce that our on-hand billing data indicates that Manoa Campus’ net electrical usage for the just completed Fiscal Year 2009 declined by over 7% to 101,171,623 kWh from the prior year of 108,950,873 kWh. This reduction exceeds our published FY2009 goal to reduce net usage to 104,160,873 kWh. http://manoa.hawaii.edu/facilities/MiscDocs/Energy_Update_101508.pdf
At an average rate of $0.20/kWh this reduction of 7,779,250 kWh is equivalent to approximately $1.5 M in expense savings, or, put in educational terms, equivalent to the full-time annual tuition for 230 undergraduates or the fully loaded salaries of 15 faculty members.
Additionally, this reduction is equivalent to an annual carbon footprint reduction of 3,345 metric tons of CO2 equal to the output of 200 homes in Hawaii.
This is the fourth straight year in the decline of net energy usage and represents a %16.6 reduction from the high of 121,350,873 kWh in FY2004.
These results have been made possible by the continuing CRDM CIP investments in mechanical upgrades funded by the generosity of the State Legislature; the Manoa Green Days conservation efforts of the campus’ faculty, staff, and students; and the continuing dedication and professionalism of the engineers and shop personnel of the UHM Facilities Management Office.
I believe that with our on-going CRDM CIP mechanical upgrade program, the expansion of the Manoa Green Days, and our Re-lamping partnership with the Center for Smart Buildings and Community Design, the campus will be well positioned to achieve our FY2010 reduction goals if we continue this trend of upgrades, conservation, and sustainability.
Regards,
David Hafner
