Electric Vehicles coming to campus:

The University of Hawaii is one of 93 testing partners participating in the Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) demonstration and testing activity of 260 PHEVs in 23 states, Canada and Finland. The PHEV testing is being conducted for the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity (AVTA). Other Hawaiian fleets participating in the PHEV testing include the Hawaiian Electric Company, Maui County, Maui Electric Power Company, State of Hawaii, and the U.S. Air Force / Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies. The AVTA also tests hybrid electric, battery electric, and hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles. More information about PHEVs, including summary testing results, can be found at: http://avt.inel.gov/phev.shtml .

The University of Hawaii was fortunate to be selected to participate in this demonstration project. These vehicles are part of a Federal Government project to develop sustainable alternative vehicles. The data from these vehicles is transmitted via satellite to the US Department of Energy. This information not only helps to test this new technology but also provides benefits from the cheaper and cleaner running vehicles on our campus.

Transportation Services is trying several different types of electric vehicles to determine the best models for campus use. We will be required by a recently passed bill to designate 1% or our campus parking spaces for electric vehicles and the installation of charging stations by December 2011. We plan to utilize those spaces with our campus electric fleet.
