Update on Gartley Hall
October 30, 2009

Aloha!
All of us have certainly been concerned about the future status of space for our Psychology Department, since faculty, staff and students were required to relocate because of the deteriorating and potentially unsafe physical conditions at Gartley Hall. They are now housed in temporary locations scattered throughout our campus, but that condition clearly cannot be maintained. Our Department of Psychology serves as a major provider of undergraduate classes and majors, research and clinical services, so keeping that group on campus is a high priority.
We're pleased to announce that plans are being finalized for Psychology to move into Sakamaki and Krauss Halls — adjacent buildings that will enable close proximity and appropriate space for Psychology. To accommodate this move, office space has been secured for Outreach College to move its functions into other space on the Mānoa campus, as well as into the Oceanit building downtown. Outreach College classes and student services will continue to be offered here at the Mānoa campus, and there will be no change in student fees.
We expect cleaning and preparation of Sakamaki and Krauss Halls to occur during the Christmas holidays and for Psychology to move into these facilities shortly afterwards. Engineering studies of the structural damage of Gartley Hall caused by water seepage are continuing, and it is expected to be several more months before we know if it can be safely renovated and at what cost.
Mahalo to Psychology faculty, staff and students for their patience during this time, to members of our campus community who stepped forward to provide temporary space for Psychology and to Outreach College for its cooperation in this move.
