Chancellor's Message on H1N1 Influenza
May 5, 2009
Aloha!
You may have heard that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today confirmed three cases of novel H1N1 Influenza A (swine-origin flu) among Oʻahu residents. All three experienced mild disease, have recovered and are no longer contagious. At this time, there are no new probable cases. The detection of the virus here was not unexpected since 38 other states have already confirmed H1N1 Influenza A activity.
The most important thing to do right now here at UH Mānoa is to remain calm, stay informed and take common-sense steps to protect your health and the health of your family. The most effective ways to protect yourself and others from novel H1N1 and seasonal flu are by staying home if you're sick, covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and washing your hands frequently with soap and water.
For more information on H1N1 influenza (swine flu), visit the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health
or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
.
We will continue to post updated information on our UH Mānoa website.
Here on campus if you are ill or have any questions, you can contact the University Health Services Mānoa at 808-956-8965.
Mahalo,
Virginia S. Hinshaw
