Chancellor’s update on hiring “freeze”
August 11, 2014
We would like to update you on the goings-on with the hiring “freeze.” As intended, it has prompted a holistic budget and hiring review. These conversations between Deans, Directors and Vice Chancellors are geared toward maintaining ample support for essential classes and for those classes with adequate enrollments.
As requests come in to maintain positions, we are reviewing each unit’s budget projections for this year and next. This process is working extremely well and we would like to express our appreciation for the thoughtful plans brought forward by each of the Deans and Directors.
Our focus is to ensure that all requests that support the University’s core teaching and research mission will be reviewed and approved promptly. We are pleased to report that the Fall semester will begin with all essential classes open. If you have essential needs that have not yet been communicated, please work with your Dean or Director.
Your continued support is greatly appreciated, as we move forward together to trim our spending in order to regain budget equilibrium.
Chancellor Tom Apple
