Recent patterns of new and accelerating uses of the global oceans present the possibility that the next decades may be as formative for the future of marine biodiversity as were the years surrounding the Industrial Revolution on land for terrestrial biodiversity. Emerging marine technologies are both contributing to this acceleration and also providing powerful tools for thoughtfully engaging new facets of our rapidly developing Blue Economy. Comparisons of the relationship between industrialization and biodiversity on land and sea will be drawn out as a means for searching for optimal pathways to engage a possible Marine Industrial Revolution.
