Abstract: Humans used to forage for fish and marine wildlife, now governments around the world endeavour to adopt the concept of marine stewardship. I provide an overview of the evolution of fisheries management from open access, common property to catch shares, including the role of indigenous Maori fisheries management in New Zealand. I discuss my experience and insights to the role of economics in fisheries management in terms of economic valuation, bioeconomic modelling, marine protected areas, ecosystem-based management and stewardship incentives for catch shares.
