Getting Started in the Department of Biology
Undergraduate students entering the Department of Biology are encouraged to enroll in biology, math and chemistry courses in their first semester at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Math
If the student is not transferring any equivalent math courses, they must complete the Math Placement Exam before they can register for a math course. The exam is available in-person at the University of Hawaii at Manoa for free or online for a $25 fee. Learn more

Biology
While there are no placement exams for Introduction to Biology I and II (BIOL 171 and 172), you are required to be enrolled in CHEM 131 or 161/L (or have already completed these courses).
Important Tip: You may start in either BIOL 171 or BIOL 172. While you must complete both courses for your degree, they can be completed in either order.
