|Course Description:||This course examines a Chinese feature film a week in order to gain an understanding of a) China’s social, historical, political, and economic milieu; b) Chinese literary and aesthetic conventions; and c) the nature and uses of film as a genre.
We will focus on contemporary film from the People’s Republic, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Readings, lectures, film clips and discussions will evaluate themes and characteristic styles of various auteurs and genres, and how these films reveal broader cultural patterns.
