I. Minutes of June 12, 2008 Meeting - no corrections
II. Discussion Notes
Meeting was convened by Dick Dubanoski. The document Proposed Models
for Discussion
was distributed to members earlier via email
(document can be found at end of minutes). Three issues/tasks were
identified:
- review the models
- review of the different functional positions (titles and functions)
- the process
MODEL A:
- May be expensive (i.e., if have all functional and divisional deans)
- As mentioned at last meeting, may be the
path of least resistance
- From the Chancellor's view, it is the same structure with more positions
- however, it points to the need for more resources for A&S; equity of resources needs to be addressed
- Functional areas can be emphasized and how those areas will strengthen the unit
- Should not be referred to as the
present model
since it is different - provisional model
would be more accurate label
- Question was raised regarding the rationale for discussing
divisions
if there is to be one college. Possible that people may like to have divisions because it provides access to someone with decision-making power. This will be added as MODEL F (one dean, functional deans, and departments - no divisions).
- Model A is the most familiar and can therefore be the most restrictive model; has the most silos.
- however, silos can be permeable
- One dean speaking for all is more effective.
- if the Executive Dean is tied to operational duties, this will detract from outreach functions/duties
- Budget (centralized/decentralized) issue is important and needs to be addressed.
- As one views the different models, need to identify and keep track of things that are true for all structures, i.e., budget, access to governance, etc.
MODEL B
- Tries to maintain identities.
- Increase interdisciplinarities
- Fewer deans - does not include functional deans - Division Deans/Associate Deans would handle functional areas
- Question regarding unevenness of functional areas, i.e., undergraduate education would be handled in each college? Same for research?
- Suggested label
School of Performing, Visual, and Fine Arts
instead of School of Performing Arts
- Suggested label
College of Asia and the Pacific
instead of College of Asian and Pacific Cultures and Languages
III. Focus for Next Meeting
Continuing discussion on Models C - E. Add Model F (no divisions).
