II. Discussion Notes
At the June 5 meeting, three models were selected for further discussion:
- Model #1 (present model)
- Model #2 (3 Clusters)
- Model #3 (
n
model - where n
is to be determined at a later date with faculty input)
Pros and Cons of each of the models were discussed and listed:
| PROS |
CONS |
MODEL #1 similar to the present structure |
- Functional deans and divisional deans
- More acceptable to faculty due to accessibility
- Each has vision and identity already established
- Nationally innovative
|
- Reinforces current silo mentality
- Disparate sizes of colleges
|
| MODEL #2
suggests three clusters
- World Cultures & Languages
- Sciences
- Liberal Arts
|
- Increase in interdisciplinary
|
- Lacks faculty input
- Diminishes visibility of SPAS and Asia/Pacific focus
|
MODEL #3
unspecified groupings |
- Faculty buy-in and involvement
- Mutual interests
|
- Logistical and process difficulty (how do faculty decide?)
|
- Comments on Model #1
- If what we have now is not working, this model won't address it
- Is
path of least resistance,
least disruptive.
- Areas of excellence can be accented: i.e., Pacific
- Comment on Model #2
- Cluster labeled
World Cultures & Languages
could be re-labeled Pacific & Asian Languages and Cultures
- Comments on Model #3
- Model #3 challenges us to look outside the box
- Data is needed to implement this model to determine clusters.
- This is actually a process, not a model.
- Other comments:
- To be useful, TT needs to give something to the Chancellor before the search firm begins its work.
- Possibility to implement Model #1 until the Executive Dean is selected and on board and then move toward Model #3 process. Model #1 is by necessity the holding model, but want to do something better. Have a phased transition and include the faculty in the process.
- Comments concerning the Chancellor's Transition Group (TG):
- The TG's specific charge is the job description for the Dean.
- The TG has met twice and has developed some characteristics for the position.
- The TG may come to the TT for input.
- The Chancellor wanted the TG's work to be completed within two to four weeks; then a search firm would be engaged. TT members who are on the TG indicated that their work is almost complete.
- Regarding reporting lines, the Chancellor wants to have all deans report to the VCAA (this includes deans that are currently direct reports to the Chancellor).
- Some indication that the Chancellor is not interested in having a Vice Chancellor for Arts & Sciences.
- Chancellor will be invited to attend a TT meeting.
III. Focus for Next Meeting
Refocus on functional areas (pros and cons)
- Issue of
Dean,
Executive Dean,
or VC and Dean
- Reporting lines/budget
- Responsibility for decision-making.
- Counter some of the Chancellor's assumptions/statements on why reorganization is necessary.
- Recommendations
