MODEL A:
Executive dean, the functional associate deans, and the 5 divisional deans: AH, LLL, NS, SS, and SPAS.
MODEL B:
| Executive Dean |
Divisional Dean
College of Humanities and Letters
School of Performing Arts
Coll of Asian and Pacific Cultures and Languages
|
Divisional Dean
College of Social Sciences
College of Biological Sciences
College of Physical Sciences
|
Two large colleges, run by divisional deans, each with 3 subcolleges/schools run by associate deans, and with an executive dean above all.
MODEL C:
Four colleges with Divisional Deans under an Executive Dean:
- Natural Sciences
- Arts and Humanities
- Social Sciences
- World Cultures and Languages
The last would incorporate elements from LLL, SPAS and other colleges (Anthropology and American Studies from other colleges are obvious examples; there should be others). This would put Area Studies and Languages in close proximity to each other and allow the achievement of scale in certain units. Disadvantages--it would dilute some of the brand name and institutional weight that Languages and Asia Pacific have achieved.
Accordingly, to make this model viable the following should be insisted on:
- The department structure for languages should be maintained within World Cultures and Languages, so that they continue to have some autonomy and remain self-governing and are not turned into service departments for Area Studies
- A prominent place should be given in the mission statement of World Cultures and Languages to Pacific and Asian Studies and Languages. PAS and L should be recognized as a special focus of the college. Perhaps ways can be found to reflect this prominence in the structure of the college and on letterheads, etc.
MODEL D:
NS
SS
Languages & Humanities
Arts
International and Interdisciplinary Studies: includes SPAS, Interdisciplinary Studies, Honors
MODEL E:
Reporting to the Dean are:
- 3 Functional Associate Deans
- Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education
- Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education
- Associate Dean for Administration
- 1 Functional Director for Outreach and Community Relations
- 2 Divisional Deans
- Dean of Arts, Humanities and Language Division - Arts, Humanities, Languages, Area Studies, Some social sciences
- Dean of Science Division - National sciences and Some social sciences
Propose having only 2 disciplinary divisions under the following rationale.
- Given that there will be a single dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, the College should serve as a unifying identity for all of us. As such, the divisions can be viewed more as a functional arrangement rather than a matter of identity.
- Having the least number of divisional structures is likely to engender maximum flexibility in terms of fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. Since there seem to be simply too many departments to have no divisions currently, propose having two divisions to make it more manageable.
- Tthose programs that need additional identity can then be unified through the existing or new centers (e.g. Center for Korean Studies, Center for Japanese Studies, Center for Performing Arts) that will be part of the College.
