Maintaining Enrollment Status

Students who have completed their required coursework but have not yet completed all degree requirements, can maintain their registration status by enrolling for ONE credit of graduate coursework (AMST 500 for MA students; AMST 650 for PhD students) on a CR/NC basis with the graduate chair, subject to the restrictions and guidelines listed below.

MA Students

Plan A: Upon the acceptance of their thesis proposal, Plan A students should register for SIX credits of AMST 700 during the writing semester; these credits should be taken for a grade. If student does not finish her thesis proposal in her final semester of coursework, she can maintain student status by enrolling in AMST 500 on a CR/NC basis with the Graduate Chair. Likewise, if a student has already completed all required coursework, has had her thesis proposal approved, has completed six credits of AMST 700, but has not yet finished her thesis, she should maintain student status by enrolling in AMST 500.

Plan B: Ideally, students will take their MA exams in their final semester of coursework. If the preparations spill into a separate semester, students should maintain student status by enrolling in AMST 500 on a CR/NC basis with the Graduate Chair.

PhD Students

PhD students who have completed their required coursework but have not yet completed their Comprehensive Exams, can maintain student status by enrolling for ONE credit of AMST 699 on a CR/NC basis with the Graduate Chair. Upon passing the Comprehensive Exam and advancing to ABD status, students maintain student status by enrolling for ONE credit of AMST 800 on a CR/NC basis with their dissertation committee chair.

Guidelines and Restrictions

  • Once students have completed all of their required coursework, they should enroll for additional credits only on a CR/NC basis.
  • U.S. State Department regulations for international students may require students to register for at least EIGHT credits in order to maintain full-time student status for their visas. For more information, contact International Student Services.
  • Student employment may require students to register for at least FOUR credits in order to maintain part-time status and employment eligibility.
