Application Information

If you are applying to one of our graduate programs, your academic record should demonstrate a broad knowledge of the Humanities and/or the Social Sciences and an emphasis on American culture.

Bear in mind that you are applying both to the University of Hawai‘i’s Graduate Division and to the American Studies program. If you are an International Student, additional application materials must be submitted.

To the UH OFFICE OF GRADUATE ADMISSIONS, all applicants must provide:

• Admission application
• Application fee
• Official academic record/transcripts
• Official GRE scores

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS must meet the following additional requirements

• Submit either official TOEFL or IELTS results to the UH Graduate Admissions Office
• Meet the minimum level of study for your region
•  Provide required identification and financial information.

To the DEPARTMENT OF AMERICAN STUDIES, applicants must provide:

• Supplemental Information Form
• Statement of Objectives (approx. 500 words, typed)
• Letters of recommendation (2 for MA applications, 3 for PhD applications)
• Each letter of recommendation should have an attached “Waiver of Access to Confidential Letters/Statements form”
• Writing sample if applying to the PhD program
• While the Department of American Studies will accept application materials in hard copy, we prefer that applicants supply materials through Interfolio.
