Marielena Hincapie is the Executive Director of the National Immigration Law Center, the main organization dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of low-income immigrants in the United States. Combining litigation, policy advocacy, communications, and alliance-building, the NILC under Hincapieʻs leadership has emerged as one of the preeminent progressive voices on immigration in American politics.
Hincapie has been at the forefront in opposing President Trumpʻs efforts to build barriers, increase detention and deportation, turn away asylum speakers, and separate children from their parents. Despite the many injuries caused by these exclusionary policies, Hincapie remains hopeful. In particular, she is buoyed by the pace of immigration reforms taking place at the municipal and state level. In her address at UH, she will outline a bold proposal for the path forward, including what communities, states, and the nation can do to build a blueprint for a more just and inclusive country.
