Announcement: American Studies Graduate Scholarships

The Department of American Studies is pleased to announce the establishment of American Studies Graduate Scholarships. The department is offering one dissertation fellowship of $10,000 and seven scholarships of $5,000 to outstanding graduate students in order to allow them to focus on their academic work and to facilitate degree completion. The scholarship will be awarded every semester, pending availability of funds. 
 
Please see below for selection criteria and application procedure and use the forms for application. ABD students may apply for both the dissertation fellowship and the graduate scholarship. The deadline for applications for the Spring 2014 scholarships is November 22, 2013
 

American Studies Graduate Scholarships

 The Department of American Studies will offer several scholarships to outstanding graduate students in order to allow them to focus on their academic work and to facilitate degree completion. The scholarships will be awarded every semester, pending availability of funds.

Dissertation Fellowship 

One fellowship of $10,000 will be awarded to an outstanding PhD student working on his/her dissertation. The fellowship is intended to allow the student to focus on dissertation research/writing for one semester. 

Eligibility: Any PhD student in American Studies who has reached ABD status at the time of application and is actively working on dissertation research/writing. The student must be registered for AMST800 during the semester in which he/she is receiving the fellowship.

Selection criteria: The selection will be based on the rigor and significance of the applicant’s dissertation project, soundness of the research/writing plan, and the applicant’s academic record.

Application materials: Applicants must submit (1) completed application form; (2) approx. 1,500-word description of the dissertation project, including an overview, methodology, and chapter outline; (3) one-page (single-spaced) outline of the projected schedule for research and writing; (4) two letters of recommendation (no required format), one of which must be from the chair of the dissertation committee.

Application deadline: November 22, 2013

Send the application materials to Professor Karen Kosasa, Award Committee Chair, in the American Studies Department. Hard copy is preferred. If sending electronically, put “AMST Dissertation Fellowship Application” in the subject line and send everything except the recommendation letters in one file, preferably in PDF, to kosasa@hawaii.edu. Recommendation letters should be sent by the referees directly to Professor Kosasa.

The selection will be made by the American Studies faculty as a whole with the recommendation of the Awards Committee. The selection results will be announced by December 13, 2013.

 

Graduate Scholarships

Seven scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded to outstanding graduate students at any stage of the program. Two awards will be given to MA students; five will be given to PhD students. The scholarship is intended to assist in tuition payments, living expenses, and/or research costs.

Eligibility: Any MA or PhD student in American Studies at any stage of the program. The student must be registered as a full-time student during the semester in which he/she is receiving the scholarship.

Selection criteria: The selection will be based on the applicant’s academic performance and statement of academic and professional goals.

Application materials: Applicants must submit (1) completed application form; (2) approx. 750-word statement describing academic and professional goals, work done to date toward those goals, and the plans for degree completion, including ideas for thesis/dissertation project and/or exam fields; (3) UH transcript (copy is acceptable; first-year students should submit the transcript from the most recent institution attended); (4) two reference forms (attached) by UH faculty, at least one of whom must be from the American Studies Department. In the case of students at the thesis/dissertation stage, one reference form must be from the chair of the thesis/dissertation committee.
