UH Manoa is a Research University
The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa is one of about 102 doctoral extensive institutions in the nation and as such is a premier research university of international standing. Manoa is the flagship campus of the University of Hawai‘i System. As one of only 13 institutions designated as a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution, Manoa creates, refines, disseminates, and perpetuates human knowledge; offers a comprehensive array of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through the doctoral level; carries out advanced research; and extends services to the community.
Manoa’s special distinction is found in its Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific orientation and unique location. Together, these foster advantages in Asian and Pacific islands studies, tropical agriculture, tropical medicine, oceanography, astronomy, electrical engineering, volcanology, evolutionary biology, comparative philosophy, urban planning and international trade. Manoa offers instruction in more languages than many other U.S. institutions of higher learning.
As a research university, UH Manoa is committed to the discovery and creation of new knowledge. Because inquiry, investigation, and discovery are at the heart of the enterprise of a research campus, everyone should be a discoverer and a learner. In other words, look for ways to become engaged in the chief enterprise of the campus. Regardless of your major, you will find opportunities that allow you to develop transferable skills beyond what you can acquire in the classroom, to follow your own interests and paths of inquiry, to explore possible careers, to clarify post-graduate educational goals, to be mentored by faculty and to mentor other students, to develop awareness and sensitivity to others and issues of which you may have been unaware.
