Academics at UH Manoa
As the state’s only doctoral/research extensive university, Manoa offers a large number and variety of degree programs at different levels. It remains the main campus for graduate and professional degree programs, including the Juris Doctor and Doctor of Medicine. Manoa also offers a number of certificates at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Currently, Manoa offers 87 bachelor’s degrees, 87 master’s degrees, and 53 doctorates.
More than 3,600 degrees and certificates were awarded in FY 2003. Over 60% were provided at the undergraduate degree level. Advanced degrees comprised 30% of the degrees conferred. The Arts and Sciences award the most under-graduate degrees (50%), followed by Business Administration (20%).
There are 16 schools and colleges at UH Manoa that offer academic programs of study. Additionally, the Colleges of Arts and Sciences house the Academy for Creative Media, and several special programs, including the Honors Program, Liberal Studies, Freshman Seminar, and Manoa Writing Program. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs administers the two ROTC programs (Aerospace Studies, and Military Science). Outreach College administers the two summer session terms, the extended day sessions, and coordinates the offering of courses via distance delivery. Several units offer academic programs on the neighbor islands, including the School of Social Work, College of Education, and School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.
There are several organized research units at UH Manoa, in addition to
the Lyon Arboretum and the Waikiki Aquarium. Many other research units
have been established informally or by Presidential approval. These units
are responsive to the rapidly changing research environment in the U.S.
and generate much of their own funding.
